That is a good question. It can be tricky to find the balance between receiving and helping the needy and ensuring the safety of the flock. We had a somewhat similar situation about a month ago when an inebriated man came into our service while the pastor was preaching. He sat and listened, but was a bit boisterous in shouting "amen", and repeating the pastor. A couple of men from our church stood ready in case action was needed. The man's bicycle had a flat tire, which is why he had stopped, so the pastor gave him a ride after service to the store so he could get a tube. But the entire time he was there, the men of the church kept a close eye on him.

Excellent, Mark. Well said. Being in college again I am surrounded by this attitude. Everyone is comfortable with everything ( unless I'm talking about the gospel and the need of salvation). Is it any wonder that the world has turned to tolerance? The gospel offenders people. It offends people because it says we can't do it ourselves. It says we are not good enough. It says we can't do whatever we want. But that is where people stop listening. They don't let the part where God offers to forgive, save, change and enable us to enter their ears, minds, and hearts.

I also agree that those who struggle with whether or not homosexuality is a sin ( especially if they are calling themselves Christians) should do this. I often here the popular argument that since Jesus never spoke directly about homosexuality then he not only didn't care about it but endorses it. To that I answer:

1) there are many things in the bible that are not directly named but are covered under broader topic.

2) the words in red are not the only words we can accredit to Jesus. The bible calls Jesus the Word, and God. The entire biblical text is the word of God. When Paul the apostle writes (many times) about homosexuality, it is not simply Paul's opinion, it is the word of God. It seems to me that people for get that. We don't have to simply rely on Leviticus for a word on this.

Now, do I mean that we should berate these people? Should we put on hard faces and shake our fist? No. I mean to say that we should do as Jesus did in the case of the woman at the well. He both had compassion on her, and called for an end to her sin.

In the end this and all other things will be made clear and The Lord will be glorified.

Mark, you hit the nail on the head with a word in your next-to-the-last paragraph: holiness. For most Christians in our day, the word is devoid of meaning. I know a church where both the worship leader and a regular vocalist have engaged in affairs and meaningless sex. Even though church leaders are aware of their conduct, they have chosen to do nothing about it. It's hard for the church to speak with one voice on homosexual/promiscuous conduct when we've stopped speaking about and dealing with heterosexual/promiscuous conduct as well. How can we turn the tide?
