The New York Times recently published an article, “A Master’s Degree in … Masculinity?” It describes the work of Dr. Michael Kimmel, sociology professor at Stony Brook University, who founded the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinity at Stony Brook.
Rather than study the topic from an academic perspective, the men in our church, First Central Baptist Church in Chicopee, MA, have been wrestling with it from a practical viewpoint during our Men’s Fraternity meetings. We’ve been using 33: The Series, published by AuthenticManhood. com. The video series examines how Jesus Christ lived during his 33 years on earth. The six 6-week modules examine a man’s story, a man’s design, a man’s traps, a man and his work, marriage, and family. We are halfway through the modules and have found them to be thought provoking, insightful, challenging, and helpful. Our group starts up again in September.
