Book Review: Praying With Your Eyes Wide Open: A Life-Changing Way to Talk with God, by Sherry Harney
Oftentimes we treat prayer as an activity to check off our list of daily spiritual disciplines. We have our prayer closet and prayer time and then we’re done for the day. Author Sherry Harney sees the instruction to pray continuously (1 Thessalonians 5:17) as an opportunity to let prayer permeate every area of our lives. She encourages her readers to pray with their eyes, ears, hearts, and lives wide open.
Rather than one more spiritual activity, Praying With Your Eyes Wide Open: A Life-Changing Way to Talk with God, strives to help the reader encounter God is new ways. The book is broken into four sections—Praying with your eyes, ears, hearts, and lives wide open—with several chapters explaining what it looks like in each area. When we pray with our eyes open, we see God’s presence all around us in the world. When we pray with our ears open, we not only talk with God but we hear his voice as he speaks to us. When we pray with our hearts open, we experience greater freedom and power. When we pray with our lives open, we focus on interceding for others and being part of the answer to our prayers.
Rather than one more guide book on prayer, the book is more of an invitation to develop a deeper, more personal relationship with God. The book is helpful and encouraging.
