One more reason to like In-N-Out Burger

In-N-Out Burger is a cult favorite for those who hail from the southwest. For those who live in various parts of the USA, going to In-N-Out for lunch is often the FIRST stop in a visit to SoCal, NV, or AZ. Carol and I made our pilgrimage and had more meals at In-N-Out than we should have on our recent trip to SoCal. We even visited their corporate store to pick up some souvenirs.

One reason it is beloved is because it only does one thing–burgers and fries–for an affordable price. Many are surprised to see Scripture verses on the bottom of some of their packaging. In an article in the Christian Post, owner Lynsi Snyder, shares her Christian testimony and the origin of the verses on the packaging. Read the article, In-N-Out Burger owner Lynsi Snyder on spiritual warfare, desire to be ‘plugged in’ to God’s plan, to learn more.

Santa Monica Pier

On Thursday, Carol & I, Jonathan, Caitlin & Andrew drove to the Santa Monica Pier, the end of historic Route 66. We also drove through Venice to see the canals, and then went to the In-N-Out Company Store in Baldwin Park. We ended the day with dinner with Russ & Nancy and Wendy, and Carol’s parents, Tom & Barbara. A very good day.

What’s next?

Gendered language like ‘manhole’ will soon be banned from Berkeley’s city codes

Soon, there will be no more manholes in the city of Berkeley, California. There will also be no chairmen, no manpower, no policemen or policewomen.

No, that doesn’t mean a whole city will be without committee leaders and law enforcement. It means that words that imply a gender preference will be removed from the city’s codes and replaced with gender-neutral terms, according a recently adopted ordinance.
The city voted Tuesday night to replace gendered terms in its municipal codes, like “manhole” and “manpower,” with gender-neutral ones like “maintenance hole” and “human effort.”

Kings Canyon & Sequoia National Parks

Since Hume Lake is right next door to Kings Canyon & Sequoia National Parks, we took a drive through the parks to visit the General Grant Tree, “The Nation’s Christmas Tree,” and the General Sherman Tree. General Grant is the third largest tree by volume in the world and General Sherman is the largest tree in the world by volume. The trees are so large and tall that the camera and lens were not wide enough to get the entire trees into the picture!

Hume Lake Christian Camp

Since our vacation plans went up in flames, due to the Ferguson Fire causing Yosemite National Park to close, we opted for Plan “B” and went to Hume Lake Christian Camp in the Sequoia National Forest. During the week we were there, Hume hosted 1800+ campers–elementary, junior high, & senior high, in addition to the adults that were present. There was a degree of haze due to the smoke from the fires 100 miles away, but it was still beautiful. The speaker for the week was Dr. Jerry Root, professor of evangelism at Wheaton College. Jerry and I served together on the staff of College Church in Wheaton in the late 80’s. It was good to reconnect with Jerry and his wife, Claudia.

Goin’ to Church

I wonder if this “church” needs a pastor. Maybe I should apply?

Watching whales and playing with dolphins

Saturday morning found Carol, me, Amanda & Phillip out with Sharon Estridge, Phillip’s mom, on her boat. We left Newport Beach and headed out to the Pacific Ocean. We saw several blue whales and a pod of bottle nose dolphins. It was a very enjoyable day.
